Thirty-five miles south of the hustle and bustle of San Juan and about one hour from San Juan International Airport, the Palmas del Mar resort community spreads across 2,750 acres and over six miles of stunning Caribbean coastline.

Quite remote from other large cities in Puerto Rico, the entire municipality of Humacao (of which Palmas is part) has a population of only 50,000. This makes the neighborhoods of Palmas a world unto themselves. They’re more relaxing than the urbanite communities of San Juan.

Both English and Spanish are the official languages of the island. Spanish dominates in Puerto Rico, but those buying Puerto Rico real estate or seeking luxury rentals in Palmas will find that most people in this community speak English.

Shopping and Dining

Palmas has plenty of shopping and dining opportunities, just steps from some of the best luxury homes and rentals. Shopping centers and malls are just a short drive outside the community gates. The neighborhood has a grocery store, mail center, convenience market, marina shop, gift shops, and other stores.

The Palmas del Mar Clubhouse features a 2,600-square-foot pro shop, perfect for outfitting golfers with the best equipment for their game.

From country club fine dining to oceanfront restaurants, Palmas has more than 20 restaurants, offering a dining experience for every person and every budget.

Try Ladi’s Place Restaurant with its unforgettable harbor-front and Caribbean views for local seafood. For a quick bite with the kids, you can’t beat The Flying Pizza. Chez Daniel offers golf course vistas and award-winning French cuisine. Other notable mentions include Pura Vida, Brasas D Palmas, La Pescaderia, and La Brochette.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Palmas has more to offer than peaceful, resort-style, oceanfront living. It also offers the nightlife of a big city in certain neighborhoods, such as the harbor. Palmas also sits right at the foot of El Yunque National Forest, a mountainous, 28,000-acre tropical rainforest. Just 20 minutes away, El Yunque is a hiker’s dream, with stunning waterfalls, mountaintop views, and an extraordinarily diverse rainforest ecosystem.

Weather, Earthquakes, and Hurricanes

The average temperature is between 66 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit year-round in Palmas. However, as Palmas is close to the beach, it often feels cooler due to the gentle sea breezes. Southern Puerto Rico, where Palmas is located, is prone to earthquakes as it sits right on the edge of the Caribbean plate.

Public transportation options are very limited in Palmas, making cars necessary. Tesla owners can rejoice as electric charging stations are becoming easier to find. However, Uber is still not as common in the area as in San Juan or Dorado Beach. Some pathways are accessible only to golf carts—another popular mode of transportation in Palmas—and pedestrians.

Several hospitals and medical facilities in Humacao serve the community of Palmas del Mar. The 167-bed Ryder Memorial Hospital has been part of Humacao for more than a century and is the municipality’s primary employer today.

Ryder offers various services, from dental and pediatric to emergency and maternity. Its modern imagery center provides MRI, CT scans, and ultrasounds, and is open from Monday to Friday from 6:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m.
